To my nephew Giovanni; when he is older

Little Giovanni, let me tell you of yourself
When you were but young, not quite walking.
You were the picture of a bouncing baby boy
Standing on knees never sitting, always hopping.

When I wouldn’t hold you in the car you cried
When I held you at home how you would whale
When I handed you to grandma; you calmed
And I let out a huff, I thought I was your pale.

I cannot lie, you’ve had it kind of hard
You’ve been through the court process
You probably don’t remember
But it affected you I’d hazard to guess.

It isn’t all bad despite what I said
You’re healthy, you’re happy
You’re the Goober, you’re my Tuckus
You are pure boundless energy.

And how did you get your name?
The name I gave you with so much care
“An no sir, you would reveal it.”
Such a secret to tell, I do not dare.

But be assured that it came out of love
Out of your squirming and laughing
From sleepless mornings where you helped
By grabbing my hair and giving it a good tugging.

You couldn’t stand to sit still
You always had to be involved
You fought sleep out of curiosity
You bounced to music before a year old.

You were an amazing child
You will be an amazing man
And I, your uncle will watch you grow
So grow proud and take a stand.

Don’t let obstacles stand in your way
You’ve overcome so much already
Your loving family surrounds you
Hold strong to truth, hold steady.

And if you run into things
That you cannot handle on your own
Remember we’re all here for you
Remember, you’re not alone.

To my nephew Jacob; when he is older

Little Jacob, let me tell you of yourself
When you were but young, just past three
You were the picture of such a good boy
Laying down watching our favorite movie.

You took to me with such amazing trust
The first time I asked for your hand
You put it in mine without a word
What a good boy, what a good lad.

You stood at the elevator; waiting
Your ankles crossed; what a character
And you did it all so well
We all laughed, “Oh Jacob Mon'ter.”

You knew how to get just what you wanted
You loved Girl, you knew I was a sucker
And despite what we all would argue
It was too hot, not just a little bit warm.

You were always quick to point out
When someone had missed a spot
When the poot needed to be cleaned
When the next movie must be watched.

Always so free with your affections
Don’t ever lose such a wondrous talent
Never stop laughing at anything funny
Never betray yourself, never stay silent.

Your parents work hard and keep you well
They love you so much, love their son
As do we all, your whole family
And I your uncle, watch with such fun.

You are the master of the nap
Able to sleep through anything
Not noise, nor disturbance shall wake you
And we watch with smiles and sighing.

You have a sister now
She is new
Watch over her
Just as you grew.

You were a great little boy Jacob
How have you grown into a man?
I hope you were true to yourself
I hope your life has been grand.
